Grounds for Sculpture
A new visitor experience plan for the next chapter of Seward’s Johnson’s legacy to sculpture.
Challenge
Founded by a member of the Johnson (J&J) family in 1992 in Hamilton, NJ, Grounds For Sculpture (GFS) has been undergoing a significant transition as it positions itself as a cultural hub for the arts. The sculpture park is situated in a horticulturally rich landscape with a labyrinth of pathways that could intimidate first-time visitors.
Several years ago, a new GFS Director realized that GFS needed a well-conceived and drawn map, accompanied by new signage for art and horticultural labels.
Approach
Working under the firm Two Twelve, LVCK partnered on the visitor experience master plan and executed the wayfinding. We designed a map and signage that could help first-time visitors confidently navigate the park while maintaining the spirit of wandering and discovery that is part of the GFS DNA. Our wayfinding relied in part on certain iconic sculptures as “guideposts,” to make wandering the grounds easier and more fun for the visitor.
