Richard Moya East Side Bus Plaza
Telling the stories of East Austin’s rich history and culture at this regional transportation hub.
Challenge
The Richard Moya Bus Terminal is the first multi-modal transportation hub linking Cap Metro, City of Austin buses, Greyhound buses, bicycles, and CARTS (the Capital Area Rural transportation system), which was created by Richard Moya to reach unserved communities around Austin. Mr. Moya was the first Mexican-American elected to public office in Travis County, Texas (Austin). He became the County Commissioner and created CARTS.
The wayfinding for this site needed to reflect the rich history of the area as well as the chance for travelers to complete their full journey through a single hub.
Approach
Working under the architects McCann Adams and Studio Balcones the landscape architect, we identified and then implemented the site’s wayfinding as well as various interpretive graphics. Using interpretive graphics, we explained how roof drainage is used to water plants. Our signage helped the site obtain AEGB Austin Energy Green Building Certification.
We extended the celebration of local heritage. Across the street, we developed an interpretive graphic of a strike undertaken by Mexican-American workers in the 1960s that became a symbol of this group being able and willing to fight for their rights.
